To the Honourable Jill Dunlop, Ontario Minister of Education:
As Ontario parents and community members, we are writing to express our deep concerns about increasing attempts by unions, including the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), and other advocacy groups and individuals, to insert and amplify geopolitical activism in our schools.
Our schools should be places for learning, where the focus is on delivering the Ontario curriculum and fostering academic success. Our schools should not be used for advocacy related to complex geopolitical conflicts, particularly those involving current wars and international disputes. Schools must not be used as platforms to influence or indoctrinate children to adopt the teacher’s views on these conflicts through exposure to propaganda and geopolitical activism.
We need to ensure that our schools are non-partisan places that accept and include students of all backgrounds and beliefs. Geopolitical activism in our schools undermines these principles and creates divisive and unsafe environments for our children and staff.
Former Minister Lecce, made several statements starting on October 10, 2023 and thereafter, affirming the need for a politically neutral educational environment. For example he said “At a time when so many Canadians are divided, it is critical that schools bring people together, not further divide our society and students. The … School Board should … leave politics outside of the classroom.” However, it is not clear that school boards are listening.
Therefore, we urge you to take decisive action by issuing a Policy and Program Memorandum (PPM), along with any necessary regulations, directives, or other requirements, to all Ontario school boards and their employees. Specifically, we request that:
1. Focus on Education: Every school must prioritize student success through the exclusive teaching of the Ontario curriculum, and in keeping with the 2023 “Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act.”
2. Ban on Geopolitical Activism: There is no place for geopolitical activism by teachers, unions, or any other parties within our schools, including in the curriculum and classroom content.
3. Accountability Measures: Noncompliant school boards and staff should be subject to review and appropriate consequences
These measures will ensure that our schools are safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments dedicated solely to the education and well-being of our children.
